First S.T.E.P.S. (Skills to Ensure Parenting Success) Teen Parenting Program
This program is a one-year comprehensive teen parenting and life-skills support system for first-time teen mothers between the ages of 12-19 years old who show a risk for becoming an abusive or negligent parent. The program begins with a 14 week parenting and life-skills class which addresses pre-natal care, parenting, family planning, job readiness, and anger management. This class helps teach these teen mothers to provide for themselves and their infants, prevent child abuse and reduce juvenile delinquency.
First S.T.E.P.S. pairs each mother with a Parent Aide who becomes a personal support system, role model and mentor for up to a year. They also provide assistance in getting to pre-natal visits and connecting with other local resources.
First S.T.E.P.S. encourages both mothers and fathers to participate in the parenting and life-skills classes.
First S.T.E.P.S. provides a teen parenting support group, as well as potential family mentors upon completion of the class. Classes are scheduled year round on a rotating basis.
